Key Results

Engineered and installed a protective canopy structure while safely relocating and returning the historic rail cars.

This was a highly specialized commercial project that combined structural engineering, heritage considerations, and complex site logistics. In order to build the canopy, the existing rolling stock yard had to be reconfigured to make space for a specialized team of movers to slide the nearly 400,000 lb diesel locomotive almost 60 ft over from Track 3 to Track 1. Straight Up worked closely with engineers and museum stakeholders to plan the move, design the supporting structure, and sequence the work to ensure the 5500 locomotive and rail cars could be safely repositioned without damage.   Construction required extensive crane coordination and custom fabrication to install the steel structure over an active rail display area. Throughout the process, the focus remained on safety, precision, and minimizing disruption to the museum grounds. The completed structure now provides long-term protection for the 5500 locomotive while preserving the visitor experience and visual character of the site.
